We thank our judges, Denis Dale, photographic arts professor at UW-Whitewater, and Kevin Alvarado, owner of LaBelle Studios in Whitewater, for giving of their time and talents to judge this year’s show.

The things the two judges looked for were:
  • Composition – How do the pieces of the photo work together to make visual unit.
  • Message – Does the piece draw the viewer in? Does it tell a story?
  • Light – Be aware of the importance of light and shadow, along with the angles and contrasts these elements give life and dimension to photographs.
  • Creativity – Has the subject matter been treated in an unexpected way?
  • Look beyond the image to determine if the photographer is aware of focus, sharpness, detail color, brightness, contrast, saturation and usage of light.
This year’s exhibit contains 7 photos in the youth division, 3 in the teen division, and 42 in the adult amateur division, meaning a total of 61 photos and 37 exhibiting photographers!

One of our entry rules states: Some prizes may not be awarded in categories having three or fewer entries. In the youth division there were 7 entries. The judges decided to forego subject categories and award first, second and third places for the division. In the teen division there were three entries. The judges decided to award only the first place. In the adult amateur division all subject categories were awarded first, second, and third place. In the adult accomplished division there were nine entries. Again the judges decided to forego the subject categories and award first, second, third places for the division.

We had one entry in the digitally altered category. That entry was in the accomplished adult division. The judges felt that the quality of the photo was such that it should be awarded and honorable mention.
