A colored pencil workshop
will be conducted from June 8th to the 10th at the L'ATELIER,
509 Laurel Avenue in Janesville by Rhonda Nass.  The cost is $225.

Ms. Nass writes "All of us can pinpoint moments in our lives that caused
an abrupt change of direction, leading us on a distinct future course.  My
initial high school art class was such a moment-from the start, drawing
my first pencil profile of a classmate, I was hooked on the limitless
possibilities of communicating through art.  The teacher of that first art
class told me I could never be a professional artist.  That was all a stubborn
German teenager needed to catapult her into an art career.  A day after
receiving an art education degree (University of Wisconsin-Madison) I
married a classmate, and Rick and I three years later opened our illustration
studio, Ampersand, which we continue after 30 years to operate from a
home/studio on the Wisconsin River at Prairie du Sac.  I am grateful to

make a living doing what brings much joy.  Please go to www.rnass.com
for samples of my work and drawing and painting workshop details."

Jefferson County Artists Showcased at
Whitewater’s Cultural Arts Center in June

(WHITEWATER – May 13)  Artists from Cambridge, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills,
Waterloo, Watertown and Whitewater - the communities in Jefferson County - will be featured in an
exhibit celebrating the creative spirit made visible in Jefferson County.  The exhibit opens on Friday, June 4
and runs through Sunday, June 27 at the Whitewater Arts Alliance’s Cultural Arts Center on 402 West Main Street.
The exhibit will be open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. in June, and it is free
and open to the public.  An artists’ reception will be held on Sunday, June 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and it is also free
and open to the public.

One major goal of this exhibit is to showcase the artistic talent that prevails in Jefferson County.  Jefferson County
is the only county in Wisconsin to have three Main Street communities.

“Clearly there exists a significant level of creativity here that has led to the development of so many artistic
and entrepreneurial endeavors within this county,” said Karen Goeschko, Assistant Director for Programs and
Services, Wisconsin Arts Board.  The Wisconsin Arts Board is the state agency that nurtures creativity,
cultivates expression, promotes the arts, supports the arts in education, stimulates community and
economic development and serves as a resource for people of every culture and heritage.

The exhibit is a result of a partnership between the City of Whitewater, the Jefferson County Arts Group,
the Whitewater Arts Alliance, and the Wisconsin Arts Board.

Any artist who lives in Jefferson County is welcome to submit their art for the exhibit.  Interested artists
should contact Dawn Hunter at hunterdawnm@charter.net or 262-473-2730.

Whitewater’s Cultural Arts Center is located on 402 West Main Street in the historic White building near the
Birge Fountain.  Parking is behind the building, with an elevator available from the parking lot entrance.

The artwork of Amy Kaul is on display during
May and June at the First Citizens Gallery.

The gallery is located at First Citizens State Bank, 207 W. Main Street, Whitewater, Wisconsin, 262-473-2112. Hours are Monday-Thursday 8:30-5:00, Friday 8:30-6, Saturday 8:30 to noon.

This is an exhibit of Amy Kaul’s paintings of North American Indian pottery.  Each of the pots depicted in her artwork exists somewhere in a museum or someone’s private collection.  All are over a hundred years old.  Amy chose to paint this pottery because she loves the feel, design, colors and art of it.

She has always been interested other cultures, but the Native American culture was the easiest for her to get to.  A native of Whitewater, she moved out west in 1986, something she had wanted to do all her life.  As a young girl, she found a beautiful picture in a magazine of a mountain and its reflection with pine trees in a lake.  She asked her mother what it was, because she had never seen a mountain before.  When she was told what it was and that they could be found out west, she asked if they could go live there.  This was not the only time in her life that her request to move west was turned down, but she held onto that dream for many years.

It was not until her own children were grown and on their own that she remembered this longing.  It happened one morning when she was getting ready to go to work, standing in front of the mirror while curling her hair.  She looked at her reflection and asked, “Do you want to move out west?”  The answer was, “Yes!”  She unwound her hair from the curling iron, put it down, went to her phone book, and picked the first name in the real estate agency listing.  She soon moved west, spending about nine years in southern California and three more years at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, before returning to Wisconsin in 1998.

Amy is a quiet person, not one to toot her own horn.  It was her brother, David Williams, owner of Country Builders in Whitewater, who brought the idea of exhibiting Amy’s beautiful painting to the attention of First Citizens Gallery.  Some may also have known their grandparents, Vanetta (Netti) and Charlie (CW) Williams, who had a farm outside Whitewater on Howard Road.

First Citizens Gallery is located at
First Citizens State Bank
207 W. Main St., Whitewater,
262-473-2112.

Hours are Mon-Thurs 8:30-5,
Fri. 8:30-6, Sat. 8:30 to noon.

2010 Project is “Thinking Outside the Box”

If you thought you were left out of the Whitewater Public Arts project for 2010, you are still in luck.  There are many boxes available for those inspired minds to paint, print, collage . . . the sky’s the limit to your creativity!

"Thinking Outside the Box" will decorate the streets of downtown Whitewater in May when the creations of local artists are displayed on the Main Street light poles. You can still get a blank box to embellish for display.  The blanks cost $25 and are available at GMA Printing at 136 W. Main Street, Whitewater. But you have to hurry.  The completed boxes are due back to GMA May 7 so they can be readied to for their perches.

The box forms need to be prepared, decorated and "sealed" on all sides to protect them from the elements.  You have your choice of either a closed box (a cube with six flat sides) or an open box (the frame of the box with all sides open).  Think of the possibilities!  You can add things; dangle things; embellish it almost any way you want. The boxes will be hung from light poles above Main Street all summer and will come down in September to be auctioned off to the highest bidder in late September.  Proceeds from the auction support the Whitewater Arts Alliance. Instructions about the box preparations come with the blank.

So get a group together to make it a cooperative project to do a box or make it a solo art project but we need artists and aspiring artists to provide the public art for Whitewater for 2010.

If you have questions you can contact Roni Telfer, rtelfer@ameritech.net or

920-728-1777.   Please get those creative juices going and add your creation to "Thinking Outside the Box".

WAA Needs Volunteers, Members
and Programs for Future

The Whitewater Arts Alliance needs to grow in members, volunteers and programs in order to continue to be a successful organization it was stated at the annual meeting of the organization on December 2.  Artists and art-advocates alike shared suggestions and opinions with the board of directors.

“We hope anyone who is interested in the arts and the future of the arts in Whitewater will consider becoming a member of the Alliance, of the board, a docent or help to volunteer in another capacity,” said Roni Telfer after the meeting.  Roni is president of the board of directors of the Whitewater Arts Alliance.

As one attendee remarked, “We are victims of our own success.”   Recent survey results suggested that people from the community generally view the Whitewater Arts Alliance as successful, and yet there is a relatively small group of members and an even smaller group of volunteers who do the work of the Alliance.  And, the volunteers DO work, from opening the CAC to setting up the exhibits, to closing events and everything in between.  The group discussed how to add members, provide varied and crowd-pleasing programs (with the focus on more performance programs), increase volunteer participation, and perhaps add a facilities manager at the Cultural Arts Center.

In other action, a new member was elected to the board.  Tracey Lyons, costume design instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was very pleased to become involved on the board.

Tracey will bring a perspective from the performance side of art, and we look forward to tapping into her energy and great ideas,” said Telfer.

There is one open position on the board of directors.  Those interested in the position should contact Roni Telfer at (920) 728-1777 or rtelfer@ameritech.com.

The Cultural Arts Center is available for exhibits, performances or other art-related events in February and March, 2010.  Those interested in exhibiting or performing at the CAC should click on “forms” then click on “Whitewater Arts Alliance Proposal Form”.  Complete the form and submit it to rtelfer@ameritech.net.
