“This Year in Havana,” a program by Jim Winship, will be
given on Wednesday, March 31, at the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library,
431 W. Center St. in Whitewater. Winship, a Professor of Social Work
at UW-Whitewater, recently visited Cuba and will describe in words
and photographs his experience of a country that is both a closed
socialist society and an exotic tourist destination. The program begins
at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Everett Long’s Photography Exhibit “Get Close to Nature”
to be Displayed at the SweetSpot Gallery
March and April - Opening is March 7
POSTPONED

(WHITEWATER – February 22)  Photographs by Everett Long around the theme “Get Close to Nature” will grace the SweetSpot Gallery, 226 Whitewater Street, Whitewater, during the months of March and April.  The opening reception for the show is March 7 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (The opening has been postponed) when Long will be on-hand to sign the poster that features his photograph, “Dewy Blueberries,” which won the Viewers’ Choice at the Whitewater Arts Alliance’s Members’ Show in 2009.

The poster featuring Long’s photograph as well as the posters from the last two Members’ Show winners will be available for purchase for $30 for WAA members and $35 for non-members.  The 2008 poster features Dave Saalsaa’s photograph “Whitewater Summer” of Whitewater’s Fourth of July celebration.  The 2007 poster features a painting, “Poppy Patch V,” by Karolyn Alexander Tscharnack.  Additionally, cards by the other winners of the shows will be available for purchase as well.

Long will also sign his new book, “Seeing . . . through a lens.”  In his book that features his photography, Long has created a masterpiece of images that depict the beauty and delicacy of nature. The intricacies of a single flower petal, drops of dew reflecting the sunrise, a leaf captured in water, two waves crashing together, a single morning glory bud . . . all of these seemingly simple natural phenomena are captured forever in intricate detail through the photography of Whitewater resident Everett Long.

First Citizens Gallery
A retrospective exhibit for Sally McCready
is on display during the months of March and April
 at the First Citizens Gallery.

Don McCready selected the pieces for this exhibit from his wife’s many wonderful creations. Sally’s early art talent and training led her to the University of Michigan’s School of Architecture and Design, where she earned a Bachelor of Design.  She and Don married in 1948, and even though they had three sons - Ben, Sam and Matt – she continued to paint and draw but never exhibited her work. This is a lovely tribute to Sally’s life-long artistic expression that ended when she passed away suddenly in 2008.

2010 Project is “Thinking Outside the Box”

Each year the Whitewater Arts Alliance sponsors an art project for display on the lighting fixtures along Main Street.  This year the theme of the project is Cubes -2010 "Thinking Outside the Box."  The wood cubes have now arrived and can be purchased and picked-up at GMA Printing, 136 West Main Street.  The cost is $25.   There is also one other expense.  After the cube is decorated it must be covered with a weatherproof finish.  Schopen's Auto Service will do this for $10.  The size of the cubes is 22.5" X 22.5" X 22.5" and there are two kinds of cubes available, closed or open. The "closed cube" has a thin sheet of plywood on each of the six sides while the "open cube" just has wood strips at each edge forming a cube.

The decoration of the cube must be completed and returned to GMA Printing on or before May 7th.  So, reserve your cube and start "Thinking Outside the Box."

Each of the last five years the WAA has selected a theme, and local artists and enthusiasts have created lively interpretations on the basic forms.  Last year’s products were produced by professional and amateur artists, school children from pre-school to high school, community members, families, business owners … all with creative ideas to share.  Anyone interested in sponsoring an artist may contact Roni Telfer at rtelfer@ameritech.net.  All of the boxes must be completed and returned by May 10, 2010 to be included in the light poles display.

WAA Needs Volunteers, Members
and Programs for Future

The Whitewater Arts Alliance needs to grow in members, volunteers and programs in order to continue to be a successful organization it was stated at the annual meeting of the organization on December 2.  Artists and art-advocates alike shared suggestions and opinions with the board of directors.

“We hope anyone who is interested in the arts and the future of the arts in Whitewater will consider becoming a member of the Alliance, of the board, a docent or help to volunteer in another capacity,” said Roni Telfer after the meeting.  Roni is president of the board of directors of the Whitewater Arts Alliance.

As one attendee remarked, “We are victims of our own success.”   Recent survey results suggested that people from the community generally view the Whitewater Arts Alliance as successful, and yet there is a relatively small group of members and an even smaller group of volunteers who do the work of the Alliance.  And, the volunteers DO work, from opening the CAC to setting up the exhibits, to closing events and everything in between.  The group discussed how to add members, provide varied and crowd-pleasing programs (with the focus on more performance programs), increase volunteer participation, and perhaps add a facilities manager at the Cultural Arts Center.

In other action, a new member was elected to the board.  Tracey Lyons, costume design instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was very pleased to become involved on the board.

Tracey will bring a perspective from the performance side of art, and we look forward to tapping into her energy and great ideas,” said Telfer.

There is one open position on the board of directors.  Those interested in the position should contact Roni Telfer at (920) 728-1777 or rtelfer@ameritech.com.

The Cultural Arts Center is available for exhibits, performances or other art-related events in February and March, 2010.  Those interested in exhibiting or performing at the CAC should click on “forms” then click on “Whitewater Arts Alliance Proposal Form”.  Complete the form and submit it to rtelfer@ameritech.net.
