"Light Up Your Life in Whitewater"
Art on Main 2011

On Saturday, September 24 (from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) colorful and unique Lanterns will be auctioned off during the Whitewater Arts Alliance's annual fundraiser at the Cultural Arts Center on 402 West Main Street. At the auction, the object for the 2012 display will also be revealed. The funds raised will help the Whitewater Arts Alliance continue to provide programs and opportunities to celebrate the arts in Whitewater.

Advance auction tickets are now available at The Commercial Bank (downtown), First Citizen's Bank, SweetSpot, GMA Printing, Quiet Hut and the Cultural Arts Center for $10 and $8 for WAA members. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the auction for $15. Attendees can enjoy a close-up peek at all of the lanterns while they enjoy refreshments at the Cultural Arts Center. Tickets also give people the opportunity to attend the auction and bid on their favorite lanterns.

2011 marks the seventh year that Whitewater light poles have featured public art via the Whitewater Arts Alliance.

This year's public art project, entitled, "Light up Your Life in Whitewater," features 48 different lanterns made by elementary and high school students, Girl Scouts, families, business people, and professional and amateur artists. More information is below.

"We have extraordinary talent in our community. I'm excited by the varied themes and all of the creative ideas," said Roni Telfer, chair of the 2011 public arts project.

The first public art project, sponsored by the Whitewater Arts Alliance, took place in 2005 when 48 fish were created by artists, displayed along Main Street, and sold to benefit the Alliance. In 2006, artists painted 56 chairs for display. In 2007 birdhouses were created, displayed and auctioned. In 2008 butterflies perched on the light poles in downtown Whitewater. Bicycles were featured in 2009 to bring attention to the many bike trails and fitness options available in our community. And "Thinking Outside of the Box" was the 2010 theme.

"Artists young and old continue to WOW our community with their creative, unique perspectives. Each year, the Whitewater Arts Alliance auctions the items created by local artists to raise funds for programming," said Linda Long, President of the Whitewater Arts Alliance.
