Cultural Arts Center Gallery

Reception: Saturday, January 10, 2026, 1pm-3pm.

The Whitewater Arts Alliance is proud to present Three Brushes Together, an exhibition featuring artists Janet Nelson, Lynette Redner, and Chris Steinmiller. Running January 3–31, 2026, this show celebrates not only the beauty of Wisconsin’s landscapes but also the enduring spirit of friendship forged through the shared experience of painting outdoors—en plein air. Three Brushes Together offers the community an opportunity to experience landscapes through three perspectives shaped by shared experiences and years of collaboration.

The story of this collaboration began on a blustery October day in 2018 during Jefferson’s Wizards and Warriors festival. Each artist arrived as a stranger, armed with easels, brushes, and canvases, ready to paint in the open air. What began as a sunny morning quickly transformed into a dramatic display of Wisconsin’s seasonal extremes—wind, rain, sleet, snow, and cold.

Lynette’s easel toppled into the river. Chris and Janet managed to save their work, and together the three sought shelter, laughing at the absurdity of the day. In that moment, a friendship was born, one that has continued to inspire their art and their shared journey.

Plein air painting, derived from the French term en plein air meaning “in the open air,” embraces the challenges and beauty of creating art directly from life.

Lynette and Chris continue to draw inspiration from plein air painting, while Janet, also a studio artist, joins in during plein air events. Their perspectives, shaped by years of painting together through changing seasons and unpredictable weather, come together in this exhibition to offer a rich tapestry of landscapes and shared experiences.

A public reception will be held on Saturday, January 10, from 1pm-3pm, inviting the community to meet the artists and celebrate their work.

On Saturday, January 10, from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. (prior to the reception,) the artists will lead an Acrylic Workshop. The class will be limited to 30 participants, with a cost of $30 per person and a $5 discount for students.

Three Brushes Together is more than an exhibition—it is a testament to the power of art, nature, and friendship. The Whitewater Arts Alliance invites the public to join in this celebration of creativity and community.
